Note: St. Jude Classic is now the Stanford St. Jude Championship
Memphis, TN (November 2, 2005) - Stanford Financial Group will become the title sponsor of the FedEx St. Jude Classic beginning in 2007. The company will take over as title sponsor of the Stanford St. Jude Classic when FedEx expands its role with the PGA TOUR to become title sponsor of the FedEx Cup, the season-long points race. FedEx plans to continue to have a significant role in the Stanford St. Jude Classic both as presenting sponsor as well as through its employee volunteer program.
PGA TOUR Commissioner, Tim Finchem announced the new partnership with Stanford Financial Group today in conjunction with the PGA TOUR’s announcement of a restructured tour. See the accompanying release for additional details on the PGA TOUR.
“This is an exciting day for the PGA TOUR,” said Finchem. Our decision to go with this structural change will strengthen each individual event and enhance the PGA TOUR brand. We’re very proud to have Stanford Financial Group join the PGA TOUR and step into the role of title sponsor of the St. Jude Classic. I know that it will build on the stellar tradition that FedEx has established and further elevate this stop on the TOUR,” he said.
James M. Davis, Director and CFO for Stanford Financial Group, said the sponsorship fits nicely with the company’s community investment priorities and its goal to secure strategic marketing opportunities. “This was a perfect opportunity for us to partner with the PGA TOUR, the premier sports marketing brand in the world, and at the same time support a charity that means so much to the children of the world. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital represents the best of what can be accomplished when individuals and corporations are good stewards of their resources and committed to making a true difference. It is for this reason St. Jude has become the Stanford corporate charity of choice, and we’re honored to become title sponsor of this important event. From a co-branding perspective, the PGA TOUR represents the qualities that we at Stanford hold in high esteem - honor, dignity and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” said Davis.
Dave McKee, COO of AlSAC-St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital said Stanford is a great addition to the event. “This is a company that has a clear understanding of what it means to do things right. We know that the continued success of the St. Jude Classic is in good hands with Stanford. We wouldn’t have agreed to anything less. Stanford’s sponsorship allows us to continue to work with our long-time partner FedEx, but now with the added resources of an international company like Stanford,” he said.
Specific details of the sponsorship were not disclosed.
The St. Jude Classic is in its 49th year. The tournament now known as the FedEx St. Jude Classic was founded in 1958 as the Memphis Open by seven
Memphis businessmen. With an initial purse of $20,000, the founders had little idea that their creation would one day become the national event it is today.
“On behalf of more than 1,850 volunteers and the board of Youth Programs, Inc., I welcome Stanford Financial Group as title sponsor of our event. I also thank FedEx Corporation for their strong support for the past 20 years. With FedEx continuing to be a major sponsor of our tournament, and Stanford Financial Group’s new enthusiasm and support as title sponsor, we will produce a bigger and better PGA TOUR golf tournament in the years to come. But above all, we believe today’s announcements will have a long-term positive impact on our fundraising efforts for the children of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” said Reggie Barnes, president of Youth Programs, Inc., and general chairman of the FedEx St. Jude Classic.
