The individual award presented to Sir Allen Stanford was created in honor of Michael F. Tamer, who served as the first chief executive officer of ALSAC and helped St. Jude founder Danny Thomas raise the necessary funds to build the hospital and maintain it in its early years. Tamer is credited with helping Thomas realize his dream of establishing a world renowned research and treatment center for children stricken with cancer and other deadly diseases.

“Each year, the Michael F. Tamer award is given to an individual who has shown a lasting and abiding commitment to St. Jude. Mr. Stanford deserves this prestigious honor because of his belief that there is always one more thing he can do for the children of St. Jude,” said John P. Moses, chief executive officer of ALSAC. “His company has embraced our mission of saving the lives of some of the world’s sickest children, and he has worked tirelessly to spread the message of our groundbreaking research and care. I am grateful for Mr. Stanford’s leadership and compassion. We are honored to call Stanford Financial Group a friend of St. Jude.”

“I am both honored and humbled to receive the Michael F. Tamer Award,” said Sir Allen Stanford. “At Stanford, we’re committed to strengthening the communities across the globe in which we do business and we believe that nothing strengthens a community more than healthy, happy children. That’s why we named St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Stanford’s charity of choice two years ago. The incredible miracles St. Jude performs every day – for the children

and for their families – regardless of their ability to pay, is what Danny Thomas’ dream was about; and I am committed to doing all I can to keep his dream alive. I’ve seen the results that St. Jude achieves. I’ve seen the smiles on these children’s faces, and it’s for these reasons that I feel so very blessed to receive this award.”

Under the leadership of Sir Allen Stanford, the partnership between St. Jude and Stanford began in 2005, when Stanford began raising funds for the hospital through the sponsorship of dinners and galas in multiple cities across the country. Since that time, Stanford Financial Group has become one of St. Jude’s largest corporate partners, helping to raise more than $15 million for the hospital.

In 2006, Stanford committed to donate $6 million for the St. Jude International Outreach Program. The funds help St. Jude share knowledge, technology and organizational skills with partner sites in nine countries in Central, South and Latin America.

In 2007, Stanford assumed title sponsorship of the Memphis PGA TOUR event, previously known as the FedEx St. Jude Classic, now named the Stanford St. Jude Championship. That same year, Stanford created the Eagles for St. Jude program, through which Stanford made a $1,000 donation to St. Jude for every eagle made on the PGA TOUR. As a result of these golf tournament-related efforts, the hospital received a record-breaking donation of $1.76 million in the first year of Stanford’s sponsorship.

In 2008, Stanford expanded the Eagles for St. Jude program by committing to donate $1,000 for every eagle made on both the PGA and LPGA Tours.

Eagles for St. JudeOn the PGA TOUR, an eagle can mean the difference between winning and losing. And now for the children of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an eagle on the PGA TOUR can help make the difference in their life and death struggle.

In 2007, Stanford Financial Group began the Eagles for St. Jude program. Every time an eagle is made on the PGA TOUR, Stanford will make a $500 donation to St. Jude in that player’s name. Individuals and companies can also join in and make contributions to help St. Jude remain on the cutting-edge of research so that families from around the world, regardless of their ability to pay, have a place that provides highly specialized treatments that may be their child’s only chance for survival.

Vijay SinghPGA TOUR professional and World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Vijay Singh has stepped up to join Stanford in the Eagles for St. Jude program by committing to make his own $1,000 donation for every eagle he makes this year.

“Obviously, I have my own motivation to make as many eagles as possible — now there’s an even greater reward when I do so. This lets me share that good feeling and turn it into something truly lasting and meaningful. I feel like my accomplishment helps St. Jude accomplish its mission to find cures for these special children.”

Vijay Singh invites public to donate to St. Jude to make every eagle count toward a cure

Memphis, Tenn. – (January 7, 2008) – St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® and Stanford Financial Group kicked off the 2008 Eagles for St. Jude campaign Friday with the sinking of the first eagle of the 2008 PGA TOUR season. As part of the Eagles for St. Jude campaign, the scoring of the eagle by Mike Weir triggers the first of many $1,000 donations from Stanford to St. Jude, the premier pediatric cancer research center.

Stanford will continue to donate $1,000 per eagle for the duration of the season. The program is also supported by the Golf Channel, which provides season-long updates and promotional support for Eagles for St. Jude. The public is invited to participate in the program by making a donation to St. Jude to help the hospital find cures and save children.

Public donations to Eagles for St. Jude can be made at www.eaglesforstjude.com. The public is offered three donation options:

  • Make a donation to St. Jude for every eagle made by Vijay Singh, who serves as the
    Eagles for St. Jude Ambassador.
  • Make a donation to St. Jude for every eagle made on the TOUR, regardless of the player.
  • Make a one-time donation to St. Jude.

Also available on www.eaglesforstjude.com is a scorecard that provides program participants and fans alike the opportunity to view the cumulative number of eagles carded for Singh and other PGA TOUR professionals. In addition, visitors can view the Eagles for St. Jude commercial featuring Singh and St. Jude patients and read about patients that are featured in the commercial.

For the 2008 season, Singh has pledged to donate $5,000 for every eagle he makes on the TOUR. This is a major increase from the $1,000 per eagle pledge Vijay made for the 2007 season, during which he made 12 eagles. Although Vijay was slated to donate $12,000 per his commitment, Vijay donated $50,000 in 2007, a $38,000 donation above his commitment.

“Making eagles on the TOUR takes on a whole new meaning with the Eagles for St. Jude program because I know my accomplishments help St. Jude achieve its mission to find cures for these special children,” said Singh. “It touches my heart to see these brave kids – they have so much courage to fight. It makes me feel proud every time I make an eagle and it gives me added drive and passion to play my best golf.”

Sir Allen Stanford, Chairman and CEO of Stanford Financial Group, said, “St. Jude is vital in the battle against catastrophic childhood diseases and we want the world to know it. It is our hope that the Eagles for St. Jude program will increase awareness for this special place and encourage golf fans and those who support St. Jude to donate to this worthy cause.”

“Eagles for St. Jude is a wonderfully unique program that shows Stanford’s amazing commitment to the kids of St. Jude. It will be thrilling to watch the eagles accumulating throughout the PGA TOUR, knowing that each one will help support St. Jude’s ground-breaking research and life-saving care,” said John P. Moses, CEO of ALSAC/St. Jude, the fundraising organization of St. Jude.

In 2007, Stanford Financial Group assumed the title sponsorship of what was previously known as the FedEx St. Jude Classic and is now named the Stanford St. Jude Championship, a premier PGA TOUR event that has benefited St. Jude since 1970. The Eagles for St. Jude program was created in Stanford’s inaugural sponsorship year out of the desire to provide a season-long fundraising component to the Memphis tournament. During the 2007 PGA TOUR, 1,222 eagles were made, which resulted in Stanford donating $1,222,000 to St. Jude for the Eagles program.
